FALL SPORTS UPDATE  

FOOTBALL 

Full details on the season-opening game on Thursday, Aug. 17, will be in next week’s paper. The Breakers face Dana Hills on Friday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Dolphin’s on-campus stadium. Dana was 6-5 last season but prevailed 28-24 against Laguna in an early game before Jackson Kollock was eligible. The Dolphins lead the all-time series 11-10-1 and have won the last three meetings since Laguna was a 34-8 winner in 2018.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL (0-1) 

The first serve of the girls volleyball season this past Tuesday at Dugger Gym saw the Breakers drop their opening match to JSerra to open their 52nd CIF season. The squad competes in the CIF’s top division of 43 schools and will host a number of top home games – San Clemente is here on Tuesday, Aug. 22, Downey on Saturday morning, Aug. 26 and Foothill on Monday, Aug. 28. The 52nd season of girls volleyball under CIF sponsorship got underway on Tuesday as the Breakers dropped a match to visiting JSerra 25-18, 25-17, 25-14. Laguna was in the match in the first two sets, but errors let the advantage slip away. Kyra Zaengle led the Breakers with 12 kills, while Sara Johnson was top on the blockers with a solo and two assists. Meg Gardner led in serving with three aces, while Coco Black had the most digs. The JSerra all-time series is now tied at six after 12 meetings. 

Laguna faced Dana Hills this past Thursday and will host San Clemente on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and Downey on Saturday, Aug. 26 at 9 a.m. The Breakers are classified with 42 other schools in the top division for the Southern Section out of over 500 schools participating.   

BOYS SAND VOLLEYBALL 

Veteran assistant Paul Cuevas is taking the helm for Laguna’s tenth season of the boys’ beach program. Cuevas competed in volleyball and soccer at San Clemente High School and has been involved with Laguna volleyball since 2017. Assisting Cuevas will be Laguna grads Malcolm Gapp and Everett Blanton. Eric Dickson will also be assisting with the large JV program. 

Schedule and rosters should be available after Labor Day. 

BOYS WATER POLO 

The season opens Tuesday, Aug. 22 with Palos Verdes at the Laguna Community Pool. Game time is 4:30 p.m., and admission is free.
